The first dental visit in childhood is not just about checking teeth: it's the moment when the relationship that child will have with the dentist for their whole life is built, which is why it needs to be managed the right way from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>At what age should a child start going to the dentist<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is advisable to start much earlier than you think, ideally <strong>around 3 years old<\/strong>, or at least within the first few years of life. There's no need to wait for problems or pain to appear. In fact, only visiting the dentist when \u201csomething's wrong\u201d increases the risk of associating the visit with a negative experience. At this stage, the goal is not to treat, but <strong>accustom<\/strong>. Making the child familiar with the environment, people, and sounds. In other words, making the dental surgery a familiar place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Why is the first paediatric visit so important?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first visit is primarily for <strong>to prevent<\/strong>. During childhood, it is possible to detect caries, incorrect habits, oral hygiene problems, or functional alterations early on, which, if neglected, can have more complex consequences in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there's an even more important aspect: <strong>the psychological approach<\/strong>.In our practice, we adopt an approach that puts the child at the centre, respecting their pace and reactions. In the long run, this makes a huge difference to oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>How the first visit to the paediatric dentist takes place<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first visit is not a \u201cclassic\u201d session like that for adults. It is a <strong>path of knowledge<\/strong>. That's why I always start with a <strong>moment of dialogue<\/strong>, observing the child and allowing them time to settle in. I never force contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first <em>Step<\/em> it's the\u2019<strong>Setting<\/strong>: the child explores the practice, sees the chair, the instruments, becomes familiar with the space. Only afterwards, if the climate allows it, do we move on to a simple, non-invasive assessment of the mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly, it is gradually introduced <strong>Oral hygiene education and prevention,<\/strong> teaching the child how to brush its teeth and how often to do it. The actual treatment only comes later, when the child is ready. In selected cases we also use the <strong><a href=\"\/en\/digital-diagnostics-milan\/#sedazione-cosciente\">inhalation conscious sedation<\/a><\/strong>, a safe tool that helps young patients relax without stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>How to prepare your child for the first visit to the dentist<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parental roles are fundamental. The advice I always give is to <strong>talk about the visit in a simple and neutral manner<\/strong>, without burdening them with expectations or fears. Phrases like \u201cit won't hurt\u201d or \u201cdon't be afraid\u201d often have the opposite effect. It's better to describe the visit as a normal moment, almost like a game, avoiding technical details.
